After all, what we're mostly talking about in large orgs these days is digital transformation and that's not especially innovative, it's well-understood, it's fixing the basics.

I also think there's something to touch on about the connections between innovation and Strategy. And, as a Director of Strategy, I'm increasingly convinced that the deification of Strategy and Innovation is unhelpful in organisations.

Increasingly I see articles like this one that shine light on the culture shift that the new CEO, Satya Nadella, is bringing to Microsoft. I hear employees talking of changing behaviors that mirror Satya’s personal attributes, such as gentleness not brute force, listening not just talking, expressing disappointment rather than throwing insults and chairs. I hear about experimental leadership programs across the company. It feels like the snowflakes of Satya are falling all around Microsoft. While these snowflakes make me feel hopeful, the changes so far feel a bit like a by-product of Satya’s natural disposition, rather than shifts with a clear destination.

The failure of the second may be less obvious but is now well documented. Companies that milked existing businesses while betting on independent digital start-ups that had no competitive advantages usually wound up discarding decades’ worth of physical assets and gambling away millions in real value. Sears Holdings may be the poster child for this kind of miscalculation: Underinvesting in its stores while pouring resources into online ventures, it has suffered a 75% decline in stock price over the past seven years. Similar examples crop up in many industries.

What strategy provides the highest chance – or even a guaranteed chance – of success? Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game.
Games, however, are so complex that it is difficult to anticipate exactly how players will optimize a game until after release, once thousands bang away at the game and share their ideas with each other online.

For Zynga, the success of FarmVille was exciting for sure. But it was also a ticking time-bomb. Suddenly, FarmVille had amassed millions of players who were farming their crops, building their buildings, and slowly leveling up through the game very quickly.

But for how long?

Many of these were players who had never been so involved in a game before. What were they going to be doing a few months from now? A year from now?

Both of these options would mean a disastrous and mighty fall for Zynga, which at the time was still a young company. But it was easy to imagine — growing from 0 to 80 million users in a little over six months, a reversal in the next six months could happen just as fast.

But Zynga wasn’t going to let this happen, and through quick thinking and brilliant execution, it was able to defuse their 80 million strong time-bomb and keep their flagship franchise going.
