We envisioned an enjoyment society, where happiness, pleasure and playfulness are key factors. The technology trend that supported this was the emerging consumer-oriented Internet of Things (IoT). To map out and understand this future development, the centre performed strategic innovation by collaboratively creating and evaluating enjoyment services that will make the vision of an enjoyment society a reality.

The Mobile Life VINN Excellence Centre was formed in 2007 and closed down in March 2017. During these years the Centre established itself as an internationally recognised research locus in the area of mobile services. The centre operated as a joint venture between its research partners, industrial partners and public sector partners with funding from the Swedish governmental funding agency VINNOVA.

We introduce the catalogue here by discussing some of our experiences using design fiction` with companies and public sector bodies, giving some background to the catalogue and the collaboration which produced it. We have found design fiction to be a useful tool to support collaboration with industrial partners in research projects – it provides a way of thinking and talking about present day concepts, and present day constraints, without being overly concerned with contemporary challenges, or the requirements of academic validation. In particular, there are two main aspects of this we will discuss here, aspects that are visible in the enclosed catalogue itself. The first is the potential of design fiction as a sort of ‘boundary object’ in industry and academic collaboration, and second the role of critique. After this introduction to the paper we enclose the output of our collaboration in the form of the catalogue itself.

Sketching and wireframing are a specialized style of drawing, used for fleshing out preliminary complex ideas, group brain-storming, a lo-fi method for evaluating interaction concepts, and as a way of roughly perfecting a design technique. Sketch and wireframe paper is essentially drawing paper that is designed specifically for this purpose. You could use it for web page design, web app design, architectural or structural design, graphic design, movie direction, animation… basically any type of design that needs a physical creative outlet or group collaboration. Not all sketch and wireframe sheets are universal, most are specialized for a particular medium, such as storyboards and specialized grid paper (axonometric perspective templates). Below you will find a concise collection of ready to print sketching, wireframing and note-taking templates. Most, as expected, are geared towards the design community, but there are also templates that could be used within any industry and for any purpose.

Additionally, motion in the context of user interfaces has understandably been held to be under the domain of Disney’s 12 Principles of Animation, something I argue against in my article ‘UI Animation Principles — Disney is Dead.’

As layers of networks and digital information blanket urban space, new approaches to the study of the built environment are emerging. The way we describe and understand cities is being radically transformed—as are the tools we use to design them. The mission of the Senseable City Laboratory—a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology—is to anticipate these changes and study them from a critical point of view.
Not bound by the methodologies of a single field, the Lab is characterized by an omni-disciplinary approach: it speaks the language of designers, planners, engineers, physicists, biologists and social scientists. Senseable is as fluent with industry partners as it is with metropolitan governments, individual citizens and disadvantaged communities. Many of these next-generation interfaces will not have the user control the computer through commands, but will have the computer adapt the dialogue to the user's needs based on its inferences from observing the user. This article defines twelve dimensions across which future user interfaces may differ from the canonical window systems of today: User focus, the computer's role, interface control, syntax, object visibility, interaction stream, bandwidth, tracking feedback, interface locus, user programming, and software packaging.

We were inspired to create Warcraft after playing (and replaying and replaying) a game called Dune 2, by Westwood Studios. Dune 2 was arguably the first modern real-time strategy (RTS) game; with a scrolling world map, real-time unit construction and movement, and individual unit combat. Like the Arc Touch, which snaps into place with the same satisfaction you get from cracking a wishbone, the kickstand was designed and "created around sound," said Panos Panay, Microsoft Surface GM, at the company’s event in Los Angeles. "We iterated over and over again in an anechoic (echo-proof) chamber. We really wanted to get the sound right--to feel and sound like a high-end car door--so you get that visceral feeling, that emotional attachment to your product when you open the kickstand and close it."

Spend time up front thinking about end users and how they navigate through the user interface of your application. Make sure to think through the usage scenarios and do some preliminary sketches that show how you believe your screens should be laid out.

This template is most useful if your logo or icon graphic consists of a single basic shape. The template includes a canvas in the correct icon size, a 96 x 96 pixel bounding box, focal zone guides, the Symbian Colour Spectrum and several precast background layers with the surround shapes of Symbian launcher icons. You can simply paste your graphic or glyph on top of the surround background shape of your choice, add the inner shadow, and save the icon as an SVG file. See the video.
