Further bad press for EA: After the official EA press release stated that "if you regrettably feel that we let you down, you can of course request a refund for your order", a customer did exactly that. To which an EA customer service representative basically answered that while you can *request* a refund, EA wasn't obliged to actually give you one. And if you just disputed the credit card charge to get your money back, your EA account would be banned, losing you access to all other EA games.
As I said before, I don't mind the general idea of buying games as a service instead of as a physical product. I do however think that if you sell a service, you should be good at it. And EA obviously isn't. In its current state SimCity is unplayable, and allowing unhappy customers to give the game back and get a refund is something I'd consider an absolute minimum of customer service.Games as a service when the game is good but the service is bad not only leaves game reviewers stumped. It also breaks the chain of "game is good" -> "game is successful" -> "more games like this are being made". It will be extremely hard to measure how much this is hurting EA, but for example SimCity having a 1-star rating on Amazon.com due to the server issues can't be good for sales. Even if EA fixes the servers before the weekend, unless Amazon.com purges those 600+ negative reviews, the game will always look bad on that site. And that is independent from whether SimCity is actually a good game or not.

When we first some glimpses of the new BB10 OS, we saw it had a lot of similarities to Nokia’s revolutionary Swipe UI in the MeeGo-Harmattan OS. BB10 seems to be a collection of different OSes into one, and the Swipe UI homage might find some new fans for the z10.

Previously from Nokia Experts, concentrating on ZDNet, Matthew Miller notes the following similarities.

Tap/swipe the screen with no button press to turn on and unlock device

Swipe up from bottom to return to “home”

Display of applications and folders, one with multitasking tiles that are live, and one with recent comms (BlackBerry Hub)

Swipe down to reveal upper menu

Slowly move finger across the screen to see elements behind active one

Deep multi-service integration.

I think their clock is similar too no (at least it was at the time).

BlackBerry Developer Blog

Beyond any doubt, mapping is one of the most valued features. We get it! With that in mind, we committed to a rich set of mapping APIs for BlackBerry 10. Some of you may have already seen it in our API references for Cascades; some of you may have tried it and, more importantly, provided feedback that mattered. Today, I am really excited to announce that with the latest SDK update (10.0.9.2318), we’ve got maps for all of our Cascades developers out there.

MapView provides out of the box elegance with beautiful map tiles and all the basic interactions such as pinch-to-zoom and drag-n-pan. You can also drop push pins for POIs and show bubbles to present more details about a POI. Better yet, both the pin and the bubble can be fully customized to represent your own branding. Although these cover the basic needs for most of us, anything with Cascades has to be a bit more special, right? So where is the moment of charm in MapView? You just have to continue reading (or watch the video above).

I know 2D maps are nice and they do their job, but they are also yesterday’s news. The MapView takes that to the next level with APIs for tilting and rotating the map in a 3D space. Hook those two up with the gyroscope and the compass and you’ve got augmented reality in your app with zero effort. In fact, that’s exactly what I did in the CustomMapView sample app. The sample demonstrates the full power of MapView as of today and will be kept up to date as we add more features to our SDK. Please feel free to fork this in GitHub and contribute back!

I am really happy for how the MapView is coming together in Cascades, and more importantly the potential it has among developers. Please let me (@shadidhaque) know what you plan to do with it and what we can do for you.

Nokia’s Executive vice president and one of its lead designers Marko Ahtisaari went on stage at LeWeb Paris and unveiled the Lumia 620. Marko starts off with advancement of technology and internet on the go, and how it affects a phones design.

This isn’t your everyday quick announcement but an actual in depth look at the engineering and design process behinds the phone, including a closer look at the Lumia 920 as well (which has a WP 7 button in the slides).

“It’s not interesting to do something different, but more importantly to do something better”

The newly announced Nokia Asha 205 has a neat feature called Slam, a way to share files over bluetooth without requiring to pair up.

We’ve been following the Asha range since it launched a little more than a year ago, but we were also interested to see Nokia Slam in action, a new Bluetooth quick-sharing feature with Android compatibility

There’s also a hands on of the Nokia 206

In case you missed Jolla’s keynote from Slush, or just want to see it again, they have uploaded it. You can see it below.

It was great to see some famous faces from the community up on stage. Really pleased with what they have brought to the table. It is different, yet familiar, especially for N9 users. Things like the widget-style multi-tasking, ambience and double tap to wake (like Harmattan) make me excited. I just hope that Jolla doesn’t take forever to get the devices into the hands of consumers.

It would seem the Meego community doesn’t like being left out of anything; either that or when they hear an app developer say “No, we don’t have any plans at the moment” that translates into “I dare you to do it yourself”. Either way we should all be thankful for the skilled guys out the who are clever and savvy enough to do what most of us normal old folks can’t.

Instago is a Reader ONLY Instagram client for the N9, that allows the user to access their Instagram profile, view their feed and pretty much do everything you can do on Andorid or iOS as long as it doesn’t require publishing to the site (you can’t post photos or comments, and as of now notifications are yet to be implemented).

The app runs surprisingly well seeing as it’s still in early beta form; and perfectly mimics the Instagram ui; loading times of images doesn’t take any longer than on any other official instagram client, and in my opinion it at least looks better than the iPad version. All in all Instago is a pretty nifty client and for anyone who uses instagram but has chosen the Meego way it’s a definite must have.

Download Instago here: http://code.google.com/p/n9-development-sources/downloads/list

*note: Alot of people here mock instagram, which is slightly justified, but as a social network (forget the ugly filters) it’s not too shabby; and even if it were a horrible invention a lot of people use it, which means it SHOULD be available (WP I’m looking at you).

Normally the failure of a small independent game with a measly $29k budget wouldn't cause any headlines. But when Haunts: The Manse Macabre failed, the news were all over the internet. Because Haunts had been funded by 1214 backers on Kickstarter. It doesn't look like there was a scam or anything, but making a video game is always a risky business. And now this project will either need to find a white knight to rescue it, or just be dead.
Supporting a game on Kickstarter is not some sort of pre-order; it is a risky investment in an industry that always had more misses than hits. Lots of people dream of making a game, and few have the skills required to actually pull it off. Expect this sort of story to happen more and more often.

Zubon is discussing playing together, and says about WoW: "Contrast this with World of Warcraft, where you can keep grinding raid tiers and one level-capped character might have twice the damage of another. Asking for a higher gearscore is effectively asking for a higher level character, just the game tracks that advancement differently." He mentions solutions like downleveling, or sidekick/mentor systems, but these are basically just crutches. To understand the problem, we must first ask ourselves "why can't people with different levels (or different gearscores) not play together?
At first your answer might be something like "because they don't deal the same amount of damage". But if you look deeper the problem is ultimately one of maximum group size: If you only have X spots in the group, taking somebody weaker with you means that you lower the overall power of the group, and thus risk not overcoming the challenge at hand. If the other DPS characters in your group deal 20k damage per second and one player only does 10k, that one player effectively becomes a burden to the others, because he could be replaced by somebody doing 20k and the group as a whole would do better.
Take away the group size limit, and that problem disappears. That is more or less the principle behind Guild Wars 2 events: Any help is welcome! If you would add a 6th character with 10k dps to your existing 5-man group where everybody else does 20k, the added character would still help, not hinder the rest of the group. Something similar was already in place during vanilla WoW: Getting 40 people together for raiding was hard, and a dedicated team of 25 could well tackle Molten Core. So you had like 15 spots where the raid group could take people who were far from perfect, but who would still have a positive contribution to the overall power.
That totally changes the social dynamics of a game. If everybody can contribute something positive to a group effort, there is less need to pick your friends by their gearscore or raid performance. And you could imagine other group or guild activities which easily allow for unlimited numbers of participants: Imagine building a guild hall requires 1 million clicks, then having a lot of guild members contributing is obviously better than having just 10 of the fastest clickers. Guilds in A Tale in the Desert function a bit like that. And then you don't have any problems with people with different levels or gearscores playing together.

This morning we read about Nokia’s deal with Oracle.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/10/01/nokia-seals-mapping-deal-with-oracle/

Gizmodo picked up on the significance of this deal, noting a possibility of Nokia winning the map battle.

When it comes to maps, you don’t want action, drama or half-baked software. You want something accurate and dependable. Nokia Maps offers that and, if its recent commercial successes are anything to go by, it’s only going to become more pervasive.

http://gizmodo.com/5947777/could-nokia-win-the-map-battle

Nokia is getting some great momentum with their maps. Whilst some were sceptical or dismissive by the statement of Nokia being the ‘Where’ company, with all these recent deals, it does not sound too far fetched at all.

Cheers Nabkawe for the tip!

Following Anandtech’s sample that prooves that PureView in the 920 gets significantly more low light in very low light situations, Laptopmag has some excellent hands on videos with the Nokia Lumia 920. They seem to be rather impressed with the phone.

http://blog.laptopmag.com/nokia-lumia-920-first-impressions-pureview-camera-raises-the-bar-for-smartphones

In the video, you can see how the super sensitive display works. Feather light capacitive touch yet it can respond to gloves and finger nails!

That’s something that might not sound impressive but will definitely impact positively in day to day use of the touch screen.

Next up you can see the optical image stabilisation in action. Notice how half press (like on my Canon 60D) activates image stabilisation and instantly the picture is smooth. This makes such a difference in getting a clear shot or not.

The Lumia 920 also shines when it comes to steadying your photos and videos. Built-in object image stabilization will prevent blur, and we saw proof when a Nokia rep started shaking the phone. As soon as he pressed the shutter half-way down, the image stopped shaking. Pretty amazing.

http://blog.laptopmag.com/nokia-lumia-920-first-impressions-pureview-camera-raises-the-bar-for-smartphones

Check out the low light test at the end. In low light mode, the competing smartphone captures NO picture. In auto, the 920 gets a clear photo.

Next up, take a look at Cinemagraph in action. We discussed this earlier in this post but this video shows it off better.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lenses-nokia-smartshoot-and-cinemagraph/

How Cinemagraph works

Purely focusing on image stabilisation. Look what happens the moment he hits record. The shake is virtually totally eliminated. And he’s shaking on purpose. I love hearing the Finnish accent explaining the camera.

Tobold's Blog

It is an understatement to say that the shares of Facebook and Zynga are not doing well. Nevertheless I believe that investors still haven't grasped the full extent of the problems facing these companies. There are major trends in the way people use computers which could potentially kill Zynga, and seriously hurt Facebook. Consider this: This week's news about Facebook was that they launched a new iOS app allowing people to access Facebook on their iPhone or iPad twice as fast. They clearly understood the trend of "social" internet-use going mobile. But they missed over half of the picture: 53% of Facebook users play games, and 50% of Facebook logins are specifically to play a game. And even with the new app, you can't play Facebook games on iOS.
Facebook games are Flash, and iOS doesn't support Flash. Furthermore the more open Android mobile operating system will stop to support Flash in the future. Mobile Facebook will be Facebook without games, and that is just half of Facebook. Facebook without games makes no money at all for Zynga, and significantly less money for Facebook. Thus the more people are taking their social surfing mobile onto tablets, the less money Zynga and Facebook are making.
This is not some weird conspiracy of Apple hating Adobe, it has solid technical reasons. Flash takes a heavy toll out of processor resources, and tablets and smartphones have less of them. I have a high-end PC and Facebook games like Castleville are running more sluggish on it than a first-person shooter in high resolution. I installed an app on my iPad which allowed to run Flash games, but the result was simply unplayable. And the app refused to run on a 3G connection, it only runs on high-speed WiFi because Flash is so demanding.
I think Facebook might actually be a better place without the games, because its social model somewhat clashes with the spam that the games produce. Facebook works best with real friends, but Facebook games work best if you collect hundreds of fake friends with whom you only exchange virtual items in games, but who you don't otherwise know at all. So while the lost revenue might hurt Facebook, overall they can survive the trend to mobile. Zynga is another kettle of fish: They simply have no future on a Facebook running on tablets and smartphones. And while they might move to iOS games, that completely changes their market situation: Zynga is a big fish on Facebook, but a minnow in the App Store. Their whole business model of gaining huge number of players by spam to friends doesn't work outside of Facebook. My guess is they will do worse and worse in the future.

2011 contenders go head to head in Steve Litchfield’s post comparing these two BlackBerry alternatives. Whilst both phones have VGA screens, the Moto opts for a portrait 3.1″ vs landscape 2.46″ in the E6. They’re not too different in size, but the E6 is slightly smaller.

As a device focused on typing, the E6 wins it for Steve, with bonuses such as better pictures, video, GPS signal as well as superior build quality/materials.

The functionalities are split so despite the 7 vs 4 in favour of the E6, Steve said he can’t award a win.

I’d like to see an E6 successor. Slightly larger screen, portrait QWERTY.

I like Paul Barnett, and continued to like him when he fell out of favor with the crowd. The man certainly has artistic vision, great enthusiasm, intelligence, and is great fun to watch. These qualities might not be matched by an ability to actually turn all that artistic vision into reality, but it would be unfair to put the whole blame for WAR not living up to its promise and "bears, bears, bears" only on Paul. So I think we should give the man another chance and see what he will make out of Ultima Forever. Already it can't possibly get worse than Lord of Ultima. And I'd rather see Paul Barnett trying to revive the Ultima brand than Richard Garriott.Skeptics will point out that Ultima Forever will be Free2Play, and is already using stupid marketing tricks like a fancy official "U4E" abbreviation. Shouldn't that be "U4E4"? Anyway, for me this is a sign that U4E is an attempt to make a far more modern version of Ultima. Let's face it, beyond a few diehards most people would consider the original Ultima IV as well as Ultima Online to be unplayable these days. And a lower budget game with a Free2Play business model might actually give the developers more freedom to create something new than a full MMORPG with a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars. So I signed up for the beta, and will give the game a try when I get the opportunity. Maybe Paul infected me with this optimism, but I think both the brand and the man at least deserve that I'll take a look at that game.

It’s great actually -- we’re really happy with how Cataclysm is going so far, and we have big surprises on the horizon. On the other hand, there are details you can see at ground level that you can’t make out from 10,000 feet.

When we started these blogs, the idea was to foster developer communication to the players without some of the inherent problems of posting in forums. Some players have pointed out recently, and we totally agree, that the blogs up until now have been from a very high vantage point. We looked for topics with universal interest that would feel important and newsworthy. That has worked overall, but we also feel like we’ve lost something from when I used to be down in the metaphorical trenches talking to players in the forums.

The Game Prodigy strives to provide game design articles and discussion that are immediately practical to readers. We believe that a game design resource should be as useful to game designers as a programming how-to is to an engineer, or a style guide is to an artist. Game design discussion should be useful, concrete, and understandable.

Game Design in itself, not game programming, not project management, but just deciding what to build, is a difficult problem in itself. There are common problems in game design that have been solved, and designers should have access to those solutions from other games and developers instead of having to retrace the same steps.

For this reason, at The Game Prodigy we focus less on theory and more on results. We look at case studies of successful designs and see how we can use them in our own games. We discuss the merits of different designs and what platforms they are appropriate for. We avoid talking about designs in a vacuum, instead saying, “This design was used in this context and produced this result.”

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of really talented developers out there that have trouble finishing games. Truthfully, I’ve left a long trail of unfinished games in my wake… I think everyone has. Not every project is going to pan out, for whatever reason. But if you find yourself consistently backing out of game projects that have a lot of potential, it could be worth taking a step back and examining why this happens.

These are the icons that show up when you bookmark our mobile site to the ‘home screen’ on your Apple device. Now, with all of the iOS devices floating around out there, you can do things the easy way by creating one large icon which is then scaled down for that particular device, or you can do it properly by creating a pixel-perfect icon for each device. For the iPod Touch/iPhone 2.5/3G/3GS, the icon size is a miserly 57 pixels square. For the iPad, it’s 72 pixels square, and for the newer iPhone4, it’s a whopping 114 pixels square.

The first objective is to describe kids as active innovators using digital media rather than as passive consumers of popular culture or academic knowledge. The second objective is to think about the implications of kids' innovative cultures for schools and higher education and to engage in a dialogue with educational planners. The third objective is to advise software designers about how to use kids' innovative approaches to knowledge and learning in building better software. This project will address these objectives through ethnographic research in both local neighborhoods in Northern and Southern California, and in virtual places and networks such as online games, blogs, messaging, and online interest groups. Our research sites focus on learning and cultural production outside of schools: in homes, neighborhoods, after-school, and in recreational settings.

I settled on The Daedalus Project as a way to easily present findings, but the problem that emerged was that it became hard to illustrate themes and show the big picture using a blog format. The Daedalus Gateway is an attempt to provide a coherent gateway to all those findings.
