Whether we call them chatbots, intelligent agents, or virtual agents, the basic idea is that you shouldn’t need to bother with human interaction for things that computers can do quickly and efficiently: ask questions about a flight, manage your expenses, order a pizza, tell you the weather, and apply for a job. A lot of these are handy but may not feel quite like artificial intelligence–later in this post, we’ll tackle the relationship between detecting intentions, having conversations and building trust as the core pieces that make a chatbot feel more like artificial intelligence.

Chat apps have responded by evolving into “meta-platforms.” Many of the platform-like aspects they’ve taken on to plaster over gaps in the OS actually have little to do with the core chat functionality. Not only is “conversational UI” a red herring, but as we look more closely, we’ll even see places where conversational UI has breached its limits and broken down.

He said he prefers bots with a more corporate demeanor. Lili Cheng, 51, the human who runs the Microsoft research lab where Tay was developed (and whose selfie Tay once tagged as “cougar in the room”), said the plan isn’t to come up with one bot that gets along with everyone. The A.I. uses four quick rebounds to drill a hole through the left-hand side of the wall above it. Then it executes a killer bank shot, driving the ball into the hole and through to the other side, where it ricochets back and forth, destroying the entire wall from within. Now there are exclamations, applause, and shocked whispers from the crowd. Hours after encountering its first video game, and without any human coaching, the A.I. has not only become better than any human player but has also discovered a way to win that its creator never imagined.

But Watson has opened up a new frontier for computers, a frontier that has the ability to understand situations and create environments that respond as a human dungeon master would. Watson’s successors have the potential to provide the kind of computing that game designers have always dreamed of, a computer that can understand what players are trying to do and play along with them.
