This book explores the impact of new forms of online reporting on the BBC’s coverage of war and terrorism. Informed by the views of over 100 BBC staff at all levels of the corporation, Bennett captures journalists’ shifting attitudes towards blogs and internet sources used to cover wars and other conflicts. He argues that the BBC’s practices and values are fundamentally evolving in response to the challenges of immediate digital publication. Ongoing challenges for journalism in the online media environment are identified: maintaining impartiality in the face of calls for more open personal journalism; ensuring accuracy when the power of the "former audience" allows news to break at speed; and overcoming the limits of the scale of the BBC’s news operation in order to meet the demands to present news as conversation. While the focus of the book is on the BBC’s coverage of war and terrorism, the conclusions are more widely relevant to the evolving practice of journalism.

This article analyses the evolution of a war and terror blogosphere between 2001 and 2011. It identifies seven areas where blogs and related online genres could provide ‘alternative’ accounts to traditional media narratives of conflict. The article also assesses the challenges and opportunities of blogs in each area from the perspective of the working journalist in order to deepen our understanding of the changing influence of blogs on traditional media narratives of conflict. Parallel accounts and interpretations of conflict will collaborate and compete in a war and terror blogosphere in the future, but it has been significantly influenced by the adoption of blogging by military actors since 2008. The war and terror blogosphere is no longer a relatively unmonitored online space which is having an impact on both the production of ‘alternative’ accounts of conflict and the incorporation of these accounts into traditional journalism.

(Gaza City, December 20, 2012) – Four Israeli attacks on journalists and media facilities in Gaza during the November 2012 fighting violated the laws of war by targeting civilians and civilian objects that were making no apparent contribution to Palestinian military operations, Human Rights Watch said today, after a detailed investigation into the incidents.

The attacks killed two Palestinian cameramen, wounded at least 10 media workers, and badly damaged four media offices, as well as the offices of four private companies, Human Rights Watch said. One of the attacks killed a two-year-old boy who lived across the street from a targeted building.

The Israeli government asserted that each of the four attacks was on a legitimate military target but provided no specific information to support its claims.

The 2009 protests in Iran and the 2011 Arab uprisings took place in complex and fast evolving media ecologies. The BBC’s Persian and Arabic language services, which reach millions, drew heavily on content created by ordinary citizens to cover events. This paper traces the flow of this content through the news process to examine how collaboration between newsrooms and citizen
journalists changed from 2009 to 2011. The article argues that participation in the news process hinges on the congruence between newsroom practices, and the practices of those producing
content on the streets. Such congruence requires mutual knowledge of broadcasting requirements. It finds that by 2011 journalists felt more comfortable and effective integrating usergenerated content (UGC) into their news output. Importantly, UGC creators appear to have taken on board the broadcaster’s editorial requirements, making them savvier content creators.

At the UGC (user-generated content) Hub in the BBC Newsroom in London, our process has become much more forensic in nature and includes:

- Referencing locations against maps and existing images from, in particular, geo-located ones.

- Working with our colleagues in BBC Arabic and BBC Monitoring to ascertain that accents and language are correct for the location.

- Searching for the original source of the upload/sequences as an indicator of date.

- Examining weather reports and shadows to confirm that the conditions shown fit with the claimed date and time.

- Maintaining lists of previously verified material to act as reference for colleagues covering the stories.

- Checking weaponry, vehicles and licence plates against those known for the given country.

Good quality services. That is a bigger challenge

Downlink is a challenge. HD £40 a day. Run a short sequence of test flights at a number of locations. Exercised a full "as live" flight.

Difficult to lift somehting that is powered when you haven't factored that in.

The financial crisis that began in autumn 2008 has attracted considerable attention in regard to the role of the media. This article examines both the audience and the content of the coverage of the crisis on the BBC News website, the largest online news provider in the UK. It demonstrates that online news was a significant part of the overall media coverage of the crisis. Online consumption patterns are very different from those of other media, but the claim that online audiences are ‘dumbed down’ or that they were not provided with a sophisticated range of information and analysis is critically examined. The study also questions whether the content of news coverage was as negative as has been suggested. The research is based on unique access to the BBC News web server-logs, which allow researchers to track audiences not only for the online site as a whole, but also for individual stories, and to match that to content analysis.

We have become media. There are events that could not have happened without media but are not caused by media, says Deuze.
He cites the Arab Spring, the London riots and the Occupy movement. These social arrangements have characteristics of media – it can rise up quickly, no one seems in control and there is no central agenda. This is the conversation you had in the bar last night, he says.
There is no audience anymore, content is everywhere made by users, says Deuze. The biggest slice of content is content about content – people telling each other stories about the stories shared by people they trust.
Deuze concludes by showing an image of dance DJ Tiesto. He talks about the role of the journalism as a DJ. A DJ needs to know and respect his source material, and people will respond to it.
A DJ like Tiesto is no beholden to any industry. He is a global brand with a record label that pulls in other artists, says Deuze. The DJ is a key node in a network.

And he announced a series of management changes to turn the BBC into “a more creative organisation, led and managed in a radically simplified way”.

“I intend to change the way we’re led to put the emphasis where it belongs – on creative people doing creative things; on our audiences and the exceptional quality of work they deserve,” he told staff across the BBC.

Entwistle said his focus on creativity could not be in isolation of the BBC’s financial challenges, but savings could not just be imposed from the centre. At a recent technology-and-journalism breakfast hosted by Columbia Journalism School, Borthwick elaborated: “This data layer is a shadow,” he said. “It’s part of how we live. In response to two Private Members' Bills promoting privacy laws, the Conservative government set up the Calcutt Committee to investigate in 1989. At the same time, under the chairmanship of Louis Blom-Cooper, the Press Council attempted to reform, transferring its funding to the Press Standards Board of Finance (PressBof) and beginning work on the development of a written Code of Practice.

The 1990 Calcutt report recommended the setting up of a new Press Complaints Commission to replace the Press Council. The announcement is one of the most dramatic moves yet toward allowing freedom of expression in the country.

Officials from the government's press scrutiny and registration department told reporters in Yangon on Monday that they no longer have to submit their work to state censors before publication.

All reporters employed in local print media were previously obliged to send their stories to censors who had the final say in whether or not they could be published.

President Thein Sein's reformist government has already dramatically eased media censorship, allowing local media outlets to print articles that would have been unthinkable during the era of absolute military rule, which finally ended last year.

This article examines how blogs were framed by US newspapers as the public became more aware of the blogging world. A content analysis of blog-related stories in major US newspapers from 1999 to 2005 was conducted. Findings suggest that newspaper coverage framed blogs as more beneficial to individuals and small cohorts than to larger social entities such as politics, business and journalism. Moreover, only in the realm of journalism were blogs framed as more of a threat than a benefit, and rarely were blogs considered an actual form of journalism.

The web traffic statistics are, as one might expect, showing dizzying levels of increase. The Guardian site, for instance, has seen unique users reach more than 4.5 million in one day – the highest numbers since the London riots of almost exactly a year ago.

Yet a rise of 30% across its network seems modest by comparison with the BBC, which has seen a 100% increase in its sports traffic across every one of its services. The red button interactive guide to all sports had been used by 20 million people in the first few days of the event, according to the impressively frequent tweets of Roger Mosey, the head of Olympics coverage.
