Maybe you can include a few lines of utility code, or a mixin, and forgo the requirement. If you're only targeting more modern browsers, you might not need anything more than what the browser ships with.

This site is fully copied from youmightnotneedjquery.com, an excellent resource for vanilla JavaSript created by @adamfschwartz and @zackbloom. But this time, we take a look at the power of modern native HTML and CSS as well as some of the syntactic sugar of Sass. Because, you might not need scripts for that task at all! (Note: these methods can all be accessible, but the demos may not be. Please take a moment to test these before using in production)

My data contract doesn’t care whether you send small chunks or one large chunk; it all adds up the same.
My favorite thing about aiming to have less stuff is this: you finish up with only the stuff you really need — only the stuff your user actually wants. Massive hero image of some dude drinking a latte? Lose it. Social media buttons which pull in a bunch of third-party code while simultaneously wrecking your page design? Give them the boot. That JavaScript thingy that hijacks the user’s right mouse button to reveal a custom modal? Ice moon prison.
It’s not just about what you pull in to destroy your UX or not, though. The way you write your (own) code is also a big part of having less of it. Here are a few tips and ideas that might help. I’ve written about some of them before, but in terms of accessibility and responsive design. It just happens that a flexible, accessible Web is one we try to exert little of our own control over; one we do less to break.

Erik Spiekermann is one of the most well-known and creative thinkers in design. A type, information and graphic designer by trade, he began his career teaching at the London College of Printing in the 1970s. In 1979, Spiekermann co-founded MetaDesign in Berlin, and in the 1980s, at the cusp of the PC revolution, he co-founded FontShop, a distributor of electronic fonts.

The web, as it appears at any one moment, is a phantasmagoria. It’s not a place in any reliable sense of the word. It is not a repository. It is not a library. It is a constantly changing patchwork of perpetual nowness.

You can't count on the web, okay? It’s unstable. You have to know this.

Digital information itself has all kinds of advantages. It can be read by machines, sorted and analyzed in massive quantities, and disseminated instantaneously. “Except when it goes, it really goes,” said Jason Scott, an archivist and historian for the Internet Archive. “It’s gone gone. A piece of paper can burn and you can still kind of get something from it. With a hard drive or a URL, when it’s gone, there is just zero recourse.”

There are exceptions. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine has a trove of cached web pages going back to 1996. Scott and his colleagues are saving tens of petabytes of data, chasing an ideal that doubles as their motto: Universal Access to All Knowledge. The trove they’ve built is extraordinary, but it’s far from comprehensive. Today’s web is more dynamic than ever and therefore more at-risk than it sometimes seems.

It is not just access to knowledge, but the knowledge itself that’s at stake. Thousands of years ago, the Library of Alexandria was, as the astrophysicist Carl Sagan wrote, “the brain and heart of the ancient world.” For seven centuries, it housed hundreds of thousands of scrolls; great works of philosophy, literature, technology, math, and medicine. It took as many centuries for most of its collections to be destroyed.

The promise of the web is that Alexandria’s library might be resurrected for the modern world. But today’s great library is being destroyed even as it is being built. Until you lose something big on the Internet, something truly valuable, this paradox can be difficult to understand.

This presentation will introduce you to fascinating and innovative services that are re-shaping the web to serve the consumers of tomorrow.

Running your own servers really isn’t hard. Most developers reject the idea outright without even trying because it’s unfamiliar and intimidating. It’s considered an extreme, horrible, unfathomable situation that must be avoided at all costs, usually by people who have never tried it.

But that’s a fallacy. There’s a learning curve and necessary integration work for every back-end option, from iCloud and Dropbox to your own colocated servers. AWS, Azure, Heroku, App Engine, Parse, and similar services aren’t free, easy, or automatic. (Neither is “scaling” with them, regardless of what you’ve heard.) Hosted infrastructure is like sync: it has a minimum, unavoidable level of complexity to accommodate. You can’t just check a box or set a BOOL and have it all taken care of for you.

If you’re going to invest your time into learning any of these options, you might as well learn the timeless one that’s most likely to survive every acquisition, language, trend, and paradigm shift: basic Linux server administration.

Every so often, a controversy erupts over something that seems relatively simple: Namely, the concept of linking to (and thereby giving credit to) the source of a news report. In one of the most recent examples, Instapaper founder Marco Arment — who broke the news about a wave of corrupted apps in the Apple store — kept track of both media outlets that repeated the news and whether they gave credit to him or not. Some did but others didn’t, and some hid their links or otherwise tried to make it look like they broke the news themselves. There are a number of reasons why this kind of behavior is still so common a decade after digital media became mainstream, but none of them justify it. Simply put, linking is a core value of the web, and if we lose that then we have lost something incredibly important.

Google and the Chrome team have been pumping a ton of resources into the WebKit Inspector. The changes have enabled a whole new class of complex and ambitious applications that would have otherwise collapsed on their own weight. This is great news, of course, but as I talk to more and more web developers about their process and tooling, it became clear to me that many of them haven’t caught up with the changes or aren’t making effective use of the tooling available. This blog post attempts to remedy that, not only by walking you through the inspector’s feature set, but also highlighting certain techniques for bug hunting and feature development that I’ve found to be indispensable.

Baseline vs. progressive JPEGs

Baseline are the “normal” JPEGs, the type of JPEG that all image programs write by default. The browsers load them top-to-bottom as more of the image information comes down the wire.

Loading a baseline JPEG, click to enlarge

Progressive JPEGs are another type of JPEGs, they are rendered, as the name suggests, progressively. First you see a low quality version of the whole image. Then, as more of the image information arrives over the network, the quality gradually improves.

Loading a progressive JPEG, click to enlarge

From usability perspective, progressive is usually good, because the user gets feedback that something is going on. Also if you’re on a slow connection, progressive JPEG is preferable because you don’t need to wait for the whole image to arrive in order to get an idea if it is what you wanted. If not, you can click away from the page or hit the back button, without waiting for the (potentially large) high quality image.

A reason against progressive JPEGs I’ve heard is that they look a bit old school and that users might be underimpressed, if not irritated, by the progressive rendering. I am not aware of a user study that focuses on this issue, please comment if you have heard or conducted such a experiment.

One of the more interesting questions raised by the new iPad and its retina display is whether or not web sites should deliver higher resolution images when there is no way to know the connection speed. AppleInsider found that Apple.com is being prepped to deliver high-res images and documented how you can test it in Safari on your desktop.

As you can imagine given my research on responsive images, I was keenly interested to see what approach Apple took.

What they’ve chose to do is load the regular images for the site and then if the device requesting the page is a new iPad with the retina display, they use javascript to replace the image with a high-res version of it.

The heavy lifting for the image replacement is being done by image_replacer.js. Jim Newberry prettified the code and placed it in a gist for easier reading.

Thank goodness then, that the matter of screen size is so simple and well understood.

Really?

As web developers, we will often need to know the screen size of the device we are displaying content on. Perhaps on the server, perhaps on the client, perhaps to be used as a clause in a media query.

But how best to measure it? And what are we measuring anyway? On the client-side, for instance, a variety of ways exist to determine screen and page size: things like screen.width, window.outerWidth, document.body.clientWidth, and so on. But these properties are infamously unspecified by any standards: so what do they all mean – and how reliable are they on mobile browsers?

So when I had the chance to re-do the websites for our company and main product, I was excited — because it meant I could try some of the new technologies and learn some things.

Cookies were devised by Lou Montulli, a Netscape engineer, somewhere in 1994.
