I just witnessed a 25 year old woman entertain a stadium of 56,000 people in Atlanta, Ga. I've never been a Taylor Swift critic, but last night I moved from casual fan to raving fan. For those of you familiar with the Net Promoter Score, I moved from a 7 to a 10! Before you make the mistake of dismissing Tay's (we're BFFs now!) business acumen, her current tour numbers are now crossing $200 Million, and that's just box office revenue, not merchandise! The tour only started in May. She's the only female act in the world able to sell out a stadium, and she's doing 31 of them!

I had the amazing opportunity to give my daughters, and enjoy for myself, an up close and personal look at the 1989 Tour machine including a meet and greet with Taylor, a backstage tour with Taylor's mom, Andrea, and amazing seats. I was able to pull it off as a surprise for my 9 and 14 year old daughters too. (Yes, I'm officially the Dad of the Year!) I'm going to try and dig into some practical ways I saw Taylor intentionally guiding her business to better serve her fans and build customer loyalty. Isn't that what we all want?

Have you ever wondered how a musician can pick out a single wrong note in a complex piece of music? Has anyone told you that you are tone-deaf or have a tin ear? These all relate to a sense of pitch—roughly speaking, the highness or lowness of a sound. It's what distinguishes a soprano from a bass singer and gives each piano key a distinct identity.

Our ability to distinguish pitch is not fully understood, but we do know that it involves some processing by the brain after a sound is perceived. This means tone deafness is not necessarily linked to any hearing disorder. An individual with perfect hearing may still have trouble distinguishing pitch because of how the brain interprets the sounds.

Research shows that 2 to 5 percent of the U.S. population has problems with pitch perception. Studies in twins also indicates that the role of inheritance in deficits in pitch recognition is extremely high, with little effect of environmental experience. Tone deafness appears to stem from nature, not nurture.

Want to test your own sense of pitch? We've developed an online version of the Distorted Tunes Test, a standardized survey in use for over 50 years. In it, you'll listen to a series of snippets from well-known tunes—some of which have been distorted by changing various notes' pitch. Your task is to pick out the incorrectly played tunes.

The call was to come to a studio in L.A. and record a song — a song so epic, so star-studded, so unabashedly schmaltzy it will never be forgotten. That song, "We Are the World," went on to sell more than 20 million copies and raise over $63 million for humanitarian aid in Africa. Though notable and good, its charitable work is not its legacy. "We Are the World" is known for being a wonderful, delightful, ever-entertaining hot mess of celebrities jockeying for attention and the ability to say their voice did the most for Africa. So, to mark this tremendous anniversary, Vulture will officially decide whose contribution was most important (and whose was the least).

She’s feted by everyone from MTV to The New Yorker. The first woman to top Billboard’s Alternative Charts since 1996. Triple platinum in Australia. In September she became the first New Zealander to have a number one single on Billboard’s Hot 100 – a feat not even Crowded House managed during their ’80s heyday.
If Neil Finn, with all his talent and those shimmering singles, couldn’t quite make the leap from New Zealand to top the world’s most important chart, how on earth did a 16-year-old kid do it with her debut single? Through the winter I’ve been looking for the answer – talking to Ella, her family and the people at Universal, sitting in on meetings, studio sessions and other events, watching ‘Royals’ take flight, watching this remarkable young woman’s rise to fame.

Did Jackson sell a billion records, or even seven hundred and fifty million? Sure, “Thriller” sold a lot of copies, but Jackson recorded infrequently, and his later albums sold nowhere near what “Thriller” did. We know from SoundScan figures that Jackson was selling, on average, roughly a million albums a year in the nineteen-nineties and the aughts in the U.S.—and that includes greatest-hits albums, like the four-million-selling “Number Ones.” That’s not nothing, but it’s not the sort of thing that adds up to a billion records over time.

Vieira’s data collection encompasses sales of albums, singles, videos, ringtones, and digital downloads, all the way back to Jackson’s time with the Jackson 5. He found that, around the time Jackson died, Jackson had sold about four hundred million records, give or take. Since Jackson’s death, he’s moved some forty million albums and fifty million song downloads, plus a lot of DVDs and ringtones for a total, more or less, of roughly five hundred and fifteen million sold. That’s about the same as the five hundred million-plus credited to the Beatles but less than any of the cumulative totals of the individual Beatles, Ringo included. (Paul McCartney, Vieira says, has total sales of some six hundred and seventy million.)

I am always happy to exchange e-mails with Vieira, so I asked him what, based on his research, the other best-selling albums worldwide were. Here’s his list:

The new generation of streaming music services like Spotify, Rdio, and MOG have more music than you could consume in a lifetime. But how much of it would you really want to listen to?

There’s no shortage of great roundups and reviews showing the pros and cons of each service, but they rarely talk specifically about the different music you can find on each. They’ve all built impressive catalogs, but it’s nearly impossible to tell from casual browsing which artists and albums are exclusives for each.

Fortunately, both Rdio and Spotify offer powerful developer APIs, making it simple to compare the two. (Sadly, MOG doesn’t offer an API, so isn’t included.)

For this test, I needed a large set of popular, well-loved albums to test. I used the top 5,000 albums from Rate Your Music, the quirky 11-year-old online community dedicated to rating and reviewing music. These albums span all genres, from klezmer to chiptune, with a total of 2,282 different artists across 70 years of recorded music.

Eagle Rock released a welcomed bombardment of quality Twisted Sister reissues and special editions over the last year (perhaps the best of the bunch were the Club Daze reissue and the five-disc DVD set of live performances over their entire career, From The Bars To The Stars); a documentary by Andy Horn is in the works; and now the band celebrates Christmas in their own Twisted way with a performance at The Best Buy Theater in NYC on Saturday, December 17.

And with a new solo album (Dee Does Broadway) on its way out and an autobiography to come, Twisted Sister vocalist Dee Snider is keeping busy with his own career. However, he was kind enough to discuss the musical impact of Twisted Sister’s legacy.

But by default your iTunes library is still packed with your old files. So how best to upgrade all of those old files, in place, to the new versions?

Here’s how to do it—keeping in mind that you can only do this after you've completely turned iTunes Match on:

Make a Smart Playlist Create a Smart Playlist with the following attributes:

Bit Rate is less than 256kbps
Media Kind is Music
Any of the following are true: (to create this conditional, option-click on the plus button in the Smart Playlist window) iCloud status is Matched, iCloud status is Purchased
