The Cost of Frameworks - daverupert.com

I think the interesting discussion to be had from Tom’s post is: Are we trying to make lightweight sites that WORK FAST or maintainable sites WORK FOR YEARS?

Your answer is probably different and depends on your past experiences.

Users don’t want to wait, so the Quest for Speed is very important. It’s also very alluring! If I do things just right and score 100 on Page Speed Insights, I’m promised that unforetold riches will be deposited into my bank account. It will rain rupees. Google is all-in on this effort: Fast is best because it makes money.

As a community, we talk a lot about performance because it’s easy to measure and we can quickly see who is doing a good job and who is doing a bad job.

However, by measuring what can only be measured in terms of page speed means we have no insight to the reasons a framework was employed or how much money it saved the organization. How big is team that built the site? One? Ten? What were past organizational failures that led to adopting a large framework? Did using a framework win out in a lengthy internal Cost-Benefit analysis? Is CSAT up due to swanky animations and autocomplete features that took minutes to build? Was code shipped faster? Was it built by one person over a weekend? Did the abstraction allow the developers to actually have fun building, therefore increasing job satisfaction, therefore reducing organizational churn, therefore reducing cost of the end product for the user?

We don’t know.

There’s so much we don’t know, it’s hard for me to believe any metric describes the quality of a site. I can build a very fast website that is harder to maintain due to critical path hoops, supporting AMP-HTML, and providing a near perfect offline experience. Just add more code and grunt tasks and you will be rewarded in ValhallaGoogle search results! Longtail, however, the user experience also suffers because updates are slower to roll out due to feature burden.

CSS frameworks are a nice way to get started with a project. You can tell by the name of many popular frameworks: Bootstrap, Foundation, and Skeleton just to name a few. All of these names evoke a starting point — problem is, unless you take time to eliminate the pieces you did not use, you’ll ship bloated code to your users.

Start with everything, ship what you need

When getting started on a project, it’s useful to have a wide variety of tools at your disposal. No matter which you choose, it’s pretty certain there will be several main tools: a layout mechanism, utilities to style forms, buttons and other CTAs, sidebars, and so forth. Having these at your fingertips gets development moving and allows you to focus on the specifics of your project.

However, once it’s time to ship, leaving the full framework in place means you’re delivering unnecessary bloat to every user. Maybe you used three of the six buttons they provide, or decided to implement your own grid system mid-project. Removing these by hand is tedious and a bit precarious, since you might accidentally remove something that’s being used.

UnCSS to the rescue

A common way to avoid this issue is to use UnCSS, a tool which will compare your HTML and CSS, removing the bits of CSS that it finds are unused. It uses PhantomJS under the hood to render a set of pages, including JavaScript. Once the page is rendered in memory, it compares all the selectors in the rendered page to the CSS source files. From there it can generate a new CSS file that contains the selectors you actually used and nothing else!

With so many great tools available to front-end web developers these days it can sometimes be difficult to understand how they all fit together. Deciding on a workflow that you’re happy with is often a very personal endeavour, but getting started isn’t always easy. Yeoman aims to solve this problem by scaffolding workflows for creating modern webapps, while at the same time mixing in many of the best practices that have evolved within the industry.
YEOMAN

Our workflow is comprised of three tools for improving your productivity and satisfaction when building a web app: yo (the scaffolding tool), grunt (the build tool) and bower (for package management).

Workless aims to help you by offering a basic HTML5 base template filled with goodies to get you up and running on every project you do as quickly as possible.

At it's core Workless is simply a mashup of all the things I like about HTML5 Boilerplate and Twitter Bootstrap with some additional stuff which I tend to use on every project such as PrettyPhoto for lightboxes, Tipsy for tooltips, Prettify for styling and colorizing code and various other bits and pieces.

Workless comes with responsive media queries setup for 'Mobile Portrait', 'Mobile Landscape', 'Tablet Portrait', 'Tablet Landscape/Small Browser' and 'Large Browser', you can demo the effect right now by simply scaling your browser window. The blue button above the logo will show what query is running.

Remember, this isn't a 'Use this, its great!', it's simply a way I found to improve my workflow and cut down on repetitive tasks in every project. Feel free to use/abuse and hack into something that fits your workflow.
