Recently two clients wanted to have a left-column navigation menu which the user could hide or display using a link in the primary menu, one on a site with a theme based on Omega, and another using a theme based on AdaptiveTheme. It wasn't enough to call the jQuery function .toggle(), however, since by the time the page has been loaded the Omega base theme has already determined that the Sidebar First region has content and the width of the rest of the page elements have been determined accordingly. Fortunately, the Omega and AdaptiveTheme base themes use CSS classes to indicate which theme regions are active, and set the width of each region based on those classes. So, all we had to do was to swap the appropriate classes each time the we toggled the display of the menu.

As it happens this is the first time I've had to insert random bits of jQuery into a theme (up until now, there was always a module for that), and I found that the necessary jQuery wrapper wasn't as well documented as it could have been, so here's a quick tutorial.

Put the following into MYTHEME.info:

Recently, I needed to use a color picker with predefined color palette for my work. Thanks to many enthusiastic developers, there are several popular, sophisticated color pickers already exist for jQuery. However, most of these plugins looks complex as if they are made to be used in a online image editor. They are overwhelming for simple usage and less flexible for customization. So I had to write my own simple color picker from the scratch.

Usage of color picker is very straightforward. Users can either pick a color from the predefined color palette or enter hexadecimal value for a custom color. Compared to other plugins, it is very lightweight (it's only 5KB without compressing) and obtrusive to use. It doesn't require any dependencies apart from jQuery core and uses simple HTML/CSS for presentation. You have the ability to easily customize the default color palette by adding more colors or replacing the palette with completely different set of colors.

slabText – a jQuery plugin for creating big, bold & responsive headlines

I’ve been wanting to attempt a port of Erik Loyer’s slabtype algorithm for quite some time now and seeing Paravel’s fittext jQuery plugin, in combination with a gloriously hassle-free lunch hour gave me the impetus to attempt it. This is the result – resize the browser viewport to see the effect in action.

So what does the script do again?

Put simply, the script splits headlines into rows before resizing each row to fill the available horizontal space. The ideal number of characters to set on each row is calculated by dividing the available width by the pixel font-size – the script then uses this ideal character count to split the headline into word combinations that are displayed as separate rows of text. Many, many more examples can be viewed further down the page.

Calculated and preset word combinations

While the script does an admirable job at automating the creation of the individual rows, there are certainly situations in which you would choose to control the word combinations used to split the headline.

This can be achieved by presetting the word combinations (using wrappers) within the markup[1]. Should the script detect that the headline has been preset, it will not attempt to dynamically create the word combinations and simply fallback to resizing the preset rows to fit the available horizontal space.

Adding the span elements to the page markup in this way gives you absolute control over the word combinations used to split the headline text and also enables the targetting of specific rows within the CSS (in order to tweak the line height, change the font family etc).

Presetting the headline does have its drawbacks though – at smaller sizes and if the rows have wildly varying letter-counts, jagged right edges may be displayed. The script will adjust the word-spacing or letter-spacing in an attempt to rectify over-shoots or under-shoots in line length like this.

The following demo showcases two versions of the same headline, the first has rows (word combinations) dynamically calculated by the script while the second has rows preset within the markup (and therefore only resized-to-fit by the script).

A couple of months ago we launched a site about Marine Science in North Carolina with one of our design partners, Liaison Design Group. A key part of the project was an interactive map that allowed visitors to find important Marine Science resources in North Carolina.

Each location on the map would be represented by a bullet. Clicking the bullet would bring up more information on the location. Since the locations of the bullets tended to be highly clustered, zooming into select subregions was possible.

We wanted the experience to be engaging as possible but also easily updatable in the future. We settled on jQuery as the interface technology to use as it made it simple to build, display and animate the map. I did a longer writeup on the detailed mechanics of how this worked two weeks ago in one of our most popular posts. Due to the great feedback we got on it, this is a follow-up with a revised version of the code as a jQuery plugin which should make it easier to integrate into other projects.

Naturally I took it upon myself to solve this problem for all of you :) I created this plugin to be as general purpose as possible. As a result it ended up being vastly more customizable than any other jQuery auto-complete plugin. Not only that, I am using actual jQuery. For some reason all the other "jQuery" plugins don't really take advantage of the radness that is jQuery. Consequently, my plugin ended up being dramatically smaller in size (way less code). Just 7kb 8.8kb minified and only 6kb packed. Have fun with it!

Suppose I have some jQuery code that attaches an event handler to all elements with class "myclass". For example:

$(function(){

And my html might be as follows:

That works with no problem. However, consider if the "myclass" elements were written to the page at some future time.

Out of the box, Google Analytics will not track how many times people download PDFs or other file types, simply because those files do not have the ability to request a tracking pixel. In this blog post, we’ll be covering the ways to properly track file downloads in Google Analytics.

Throughout this blog post, I’ll be assuming that you are wanting to track a PDF download, but keep in mind that you could use this same technique to track the download of a .mp3, .mp4, .xlsx, etc — it really does not matter. Additionally, I recommend tracking file downloads as events (so that you are not inflating pageviews on your site), but you could very well track them as pageviews. In the new Google Analytics v5, you can now setup events as goals!

This Javascript/jQuery plugin is completely free & open-source [MIT]. Commercial solutions are under development which will complement the timeline viewer: authoring tools, databases, support plans, etc. Our code repository is at github.com/timeglider.

The timeline can be zoomed by dragging the vertical slider at right: up for zooming in (less time shown) and down for zooming out (more time shown). The mousewheel also works as a zoom controller. Any white area on the "stage" of the timeline can be dragged left and right, as can the blue "ruler" which marks out different units of time. Clicking on an event brings up a small modal window with a description and links if any are provided in the data.

In addition to being loaded from a JSON file (or JSON-formatted PHP, etc), Timeglider timelines can load directly from data you provide in an HTML table.

Although it took me a while to accept it and I still prefer to write my own stuff, I can't deny its advantages. Recently I had a project that demanded a rollover image preview. You know, one of those tooltip-like bubble popups that appears when you roll over link or a thumbnail. Since we were already using jQuery on that project I decided to take it easy and investigate what can be done with that extraordinary library. So I came up with a script so simple it hurts! The best thing yet is that it can be applied for a variety of purposes. Today I will show you 3 examples of using the same very, very simple script.

Unobtrusive and smooth is the key here.

There are a few cases where you want to know if the user is idle. Namely:

    * You want to preload more assets
    * You want to grab their attention to pull them back
    * You want close their banking session after 5 minutes of inactivity. (Jerk!)
    * You want the site to sneak off the screen and see if they notice ;-)

Nick Zakas wrote a script for YUI3 to handle these cases. His writeup has a great description of the architecture approach he took to the script.

In my jQuery adaptation, I did a few different things:

   1. Leveraged event namespaces for easy unbinding
   2. Considered mousewheel as activity, in addition to keyboard and mouse movement.
   3. Gave it a bit more jQuery-ish of an API

Also called collapsibles, spin-downs, toggle panels, twisties, and content disclosures, they're ideal for selectively displaying optional information — like instructional text or additional details, for example — so users can focus on the task at hand and view this content only as needed.

The collapsible content area widget is fairly simple — a couple of HTML elements controlled with minimal CSS and JavaScript — but when we were researching our book, Designing with Progressive Enhancement, we discovered that many common approaches to creating collapsible content fail to incorporate accessibility features. Happily, there is a way to build collapsible content with progressive enhancement so it delivers an optimal accessible experience for sighted and screen reader users alike.
