We’ve cared for each other, durably and devotedly, for decades, but we are not 'family' in the eyes of any relevant authorities, and certainly not a couple. (She’s a lesbian; I’m a straight man.) We’re not roommates or lovers or coparents. We are not co-owners of a condo, a couch, a dog. It’s true that we’re both professors and so maybe, on somebody’s HR spreadsheet, we go down as 'colleagues.' // What we are is friends—'just friends,' as I said to dozens of inquiring hospital personnel over the last years—but that’s right only to the degree that you can infuse that pale and minimizing term with something considerably more full-spectrum and radiant, something that transpires nearer to the scale of, say, the known world."

In academia, you receive specific training in a narrow field of specialization, which creates certain opportunities for your work and forecloses others. Most notably, it discourages a certain form of dilettantism—peering into an adjacent field that you don’t have the “right” background for, using techniques you aren’t “qualified” to be doing, introducing references and sources that are nontraditional and even looked down upon in your primary field. Research as a leisure activity isn’t constrained by these disciplinary fiefdoms and schisms. Any discipline can offer interesting ideas, tools, techniques."

Instead of being a delay effect or tremolo, the ZOIA provides the modules necessary to build a delay or tremolo from the ground up. But since you're the one building it, you can make it do whatever you want.

With the ZOIA you can build your own custom effects, synthesizers, midi controllers, and virtual pedal boards. And to make life a little easier, we've created modules for all your standard guitar effects. So for instance, if you want a phaser, you can just plop down a phaser. You don't have to break out the textbooks to learn that they're built out of all-pass filters. (Of course, if you're a nerd like us, you can use the ZOIA to build them out of all-pass filters)."

"The form of the commune 'is as at once a political movement and a shared territory, a tactic and a community-in-the-making.' It is not the fulfillment of a preordained revolutionary program, nor one that is modeled on idealist or romantic models of totality, but a dynamic process responding to present and local conditions. It reemerges during spatial struggles like the decentralized movement to Stop Cop City in Atlanta (and across the world, as Joy James reminds us, since many cities are cop cities in and of themselves) and at the ZAD in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, France, where farmers, anarchists, and other participants were able to halt a sixty-year-old plan to build a new airport, notwithstanding brutal state repression. Movements in the same country mobilizing to stop the hoarding of water by agricultural capital in mega-basins present a new terrain of this struggle, waged today by collectives like Soulèvements de la Terre. The following is a conversation between Kristin Ross and Andreas Petrossiants that was held at e-flux in October 2024. It has been edited for clarity."

It uses and expands upon the systems developed in Into the Odd, resulting in a rules-set that’s easy to run and easier to play, a standalone journey into an unknowable world. The system takes the world’s favourite RPG and simplifies it to a minimalist core, where players’ decisions take the spotlight over complicated character sheets.

Bastion is the only city that matters, now entering its electrical age. Each of the characters has a failed career behind them and share a colossal debt. Treasure Hunting is the only spark of hope. Beyond the infinite city of Bastion you might delve into the rural decay of Deep Country or the Underground that sits just below time and space."

And not just the jump scares, gore, and promise of co-eds going full frontal. In their heavy psychologizing, and insistence upon their sophistication, they take for that granted terror, anxiety, and disgust are insufficient emotional responses. But a truly effective scare or gnarly gross-out is more difficult to put across the screen convincingly than some Psych 101 bunk about grief. Elevated horror's recourse to "the real" diminishes the genre's power, which has always fed on fear of the fantastic, the unknown, the unreal, and given it form in all the omnifarious creatures, creeps, ghouls, and brutes that go bump in the night. Horror's ability to terrify is its art."

It is a double vinyl set of empty locked grooves that contains nothing but its very own surface noise - and physical structure. It is a sculptural revision of Stefan Goldmann’s earlier locked groove-based double vinyl 'The Grand Hemiola', but it also serves as a genuine hauntological vinyl surface noise tool kit, out on its own.

Pulling a knife or other tool to its grooves allows for cutting your literally uniquely own beats directly into the record. A total of 132 empty grooves allows for as many individual patterns to be created (note that even any contact with the needle or the accumulation of dust change the surface noise of the groove). All loops together allow for thousands of layered combinations (4356 to be exact), which allow for further variations by changing rotation speeds with the continuous pitch controls of a set of turntables (face eternity here). Whatever had been masked by audio before is now made audible here."
